On Tuesday, June 24 from 5:30 PM to 7 PM - at 1204 W 2nd Street (2nd and Patterson) My Sister’s Closet will unveil a new and unique Suffragette Bike Sculpture, created by renowned local artist Joe LaMantia. It will also be an opportunity to get a sneak preview of the Sister’s Closet’s new facility before any renovations take place.
This event includes a Chamber of Commerce Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony; a Reflection & Proclamation by Mayor, Kerry Thomson; some insight from our Monroe County History Center’s curator, Hillary Fleck; Tours of our New Building; and of course, Incredible Stories of Courageous Women helped with our services! This celebration has been organized and partly underwritten by the Bloomington Rotary Club.
This joyful Relocation Event will recognize the trailblazing Suffragettes who rode their bikes as they campaigned to pass the 19th Amendment - which gave women the Right to Vote – and the courageous, determined women of today who are raising children and beating the odds of successfully moving out of multi-generational poverty.
This remarkable sculpture is a re-imagined Statue of Liberty, made from upcycled street signs, license plates, and bike reflectors. Instead of the Declaration of Independence, this Lady Liberty will be holding a solar panel, lighting her torch and symbolizing our eventual freedom from fossil fuels. The base will show exposed chains (originally included by the French) to symbolize America’s abolition of slavery. Also, there will be two artistic bike racks!
On-site parking is reserved for vendors and speakers. Additional off-site parking is available at Sunmart 515 S. Adams St. (next to John Deere), Allied 1208 W. 2nd St., Duke Energy Indiana 1100 W. 2nd St. and, Optima Dermatology & Medical Aesthetics 1010 W. 2nd St. (parking available after 5:30pm).
