After the death of a loved one, kids often think:

    • They won't feel good again
    • There is no other young person to talk to who has lost someone special
    • No one understands

Camp Good Grief can help with these feelings, emotions and thoughts. Through art, music and play, campers will connect with others experiencing loss, learn positive coping and how to preserve memories and honor loved ones.

Camp Good Grief is a no-cost 1-day camp for children ages 6 to 16 with education about grief and how to cope with that grief. It is facilitated by IU Health team members, primarily nurses and other clinicians.

Childhood grief is more common than most realize and knowing how to talk to and guide a child who has experienced the death of someone close to them can be challenging. It is normal for adults to want to protect children from difficult experiences and information. Unaddressed grief, though, can cause youth to feel isolated and alone, both in their family and from other children. Children who are grieving are at greater risk than their peers for depression, suicide, poverty and substance abuse.

Through understanding, support, and opportunities to freely express thoughts and feelings, children and teens can develop healthy coping skills that enhance their lives.
