I am rating Hays and Sons 2 stars for just a few specific reasons. I had a sewer back up with water damage in an upstairs bathroom and basement. The remediation team arrived, assessed, and brought out huge heater/dehumidifiers to dry things out. What was supposed to take 7-10 days took over 5 WEEKS. Nothing else was tried during this time. Since the flooring was being replaced anyway ... I'm not sure why it mattered. No instructions were provided to prevent heat related damage. Daily texts but very short work days (arriving at 1 pm leaving at 3 pm). It was very much overpromised and underdelivered.
No estimates were provided until I received the final bill either. Rating less than 1 star.
Enter the reconstruction team. Jon was great about communication, setting expectations, and overdelivering. Rating 4 stars. Would have been a 5 except he never really addressed the secondary damage to my bathroom vanity due to the prolonged intense heat used to dry out ceramic tile.
Follow up - I messaged the GM about my concerns before going public
Within 24 hours I received calls from both remediation and reconstruction managers. Their follow up included assuring me they had talked to the crews for training purposes. No indication of activity to fix the vanity. No indication of fixing cosmetic issues I reported in the basement.
Have to say ... I wanted to be satisfied with the ways things were resolved. Unfortunately my last two emails have gone unanswered.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Dec 9, 2023Previous reviewI am rating Hays and Sons 3 stars for just a few specific reasons. Going four months now, I have yet to get one follow up from anyone from the company (calls + emails). We have asked multiple times for the estimated cost of the repairs and completion timeline. None of that was provided. Poor lack of professionalism & follow-up.

I would give this company no stars if I could. For your own sanity, do not work with Hays and Sons. Disorganized, unprofessional and poor workmanship.

I have been trying to find the words to describe my experience with this company and all I can say is STAY AWAY. I live in Zionsville and my insurance company recommended Hays and Sons after I had a water line break and flood. This happened 8 months ago and I am still displaced from my home. I have NEVER seen such disorganization and unprofessionalism in my life. For starters, during the demo they caused damage to my home. They broke glass items, dragged tools across my hardwood floors causing huge scrapes, left my front door unlocked, and left a water valve cover off in my yard that someone could have broken an ankle in. When I showed them the damage they claimed they hadn't broken anything, yet the glass was still all over my floor and some was even embedded in my foot from when I had walked by the damage. They forgot to repaint the walls before installing my brand new cabinets and did the sloppiness job ever. It looked like toddlers had been doing the work with paint splatter all over my new cabinets and windows!!
On top of all of this, communication is horrible. They just cannot get it together. They will send a team to start a job (such as laying carpet or installing cabinets) and just quit halfway through. WEEKS will go by and no one ever returns. I have basically had to manage my own project and am constantly having to point these issues out to my project manager. His usual response is something along the lines of "Oh wow, I'm sorry, I thought they finished that. That's my fault for not checking in." We seem to have this conversation weekly and nothing ever changes. If you try to call to speak to upper management all you get is a voicemail box and no response to your messages.
If you want quality work, good communication, and a job done in a timely manner this is NOT the company for you. Stay far, far away. At this point I doubt my project will ever be completed. The headache this has caused me is beyond words.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Brittany C.Indianapolis, IN1253428Aug 31, 2019
Completely unorganized to the point that my homeowner insurance company removed them off their vendor list for the state of Indiana after our experience with them. Our home restoration should have never taken as long as it did. From shabby assessment/ quotes to no-show contractors , work having to be re-done and wrong materials purchased and lack of communication from the project manager. The only thing they successfully do was continue to badger our family about paying our deductible to them after they already receive over 10k payment in FULL from our insurance company to do the work needed. It's a shame for company to cause as much stress as they did during a time of home loss/ damage. Hays and Sons definitely did not fit the bill and I wish we were able to select our restoration company.

My house was hit by lightning in August, 2019. We hired Hays and Sons to do the restoration. They have been outstanding in every respect: communication, quality work and materials, honesty, efficiency and great customer service! It has been a wonderful experience overall and truly I have been delighted every step of the way as the various experts within the organization have each performed at an exceptional level!

In 2011 a car drove through the front of our home, Hays & Sons was recommended by our insurance company to do the job. HORRIBLE!!
It is a good thing that I took pictures of everything in my house because they tried to replace everything damaged with the CHEAPEST materials that they could! I had to prove to them with photos that what I had was better quality. When they were restoring the garage they got paint all over the floor and didn't want to clean up because it was a garage.
The drywall repair in many rooms was a joke! It was hung improperly and the finished walls were wavy with seams and bumps, not smooth. I found out that they had people doing these jobs that had no prior experience!
The Siding on the house was cut long and is now buckled and wavy.
There is a list a mile long but I think you get the idea. Not only was the job done Poorly but the Boss man who came to check in once in a while was very RUDE and treated me like I didn't know what I was talking about! I also had to prove everything to him with photos. I stayed at the house everyday while the work was being completed so that I could make sure that our insurance wasn't getting charged for things that were either not done or done with inferior quality products.
I also want to add that Hays & Sons says that they are a Christian company but the employees do not conduct themselves as so.
I would never recommend this company to anyone!!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Traci S.Bloomington, IN02Aug 15, 2018First to Review
Hays and Sons was sent to my house by insurance after some wind damage. I stuck with them for the repairs which was a terrible idea. The PM was absolutely unprofessional and things kept getting messed up (1. AC drain line was cut (still unsure why.....) and it was a "silly mistake" that it wasn't fixed so AC condensation was draining all over my floors. 2. When they did fix it it wasn't done correctly and resulted in even more water damage. 3. When I addressed said water damage they threw a fit about it until the supervisor finally said they'd give me a $400 credit for the damage. 4. Now I get my final bill and it's up $200+ for something that they "didn't know insurance wouldn't cover until after the work was done" so now it's another expenseAvoid them!! Headache after headache and took several months to do a small job.
